Hi! I'm Sam from Nyack, NY. I'm into music, illustration, gardening, making things, and vintage shopping.

Excited to follow along on a non-instagram platform, where there's a bit more space to expand ideas (or not!) and it doesn't have that drugified-scrolling energy. Huzzah!

Welcome! One of my oldest friends lives in Nyack. Please say hi to Gaby Moss if you see her.

Hi Sam , I just moved away from the Nyack area back to So cal when my partner passed away . If you love vintage shopping you need to go to the Newburgh Vintage Emporium and warehouse . Sorry that I just popped into the middle of your introduction but I saw Nyack and smiled !

Hi Carson! I’m Corinne. I’m an illustrator too, and a graphic designer full time. I love making things and playing bass and singing in my band Queasy. You’re a huge inspiration to me, so this is exciting!

I personally love the name Slowpoke just as it is. You didn’t ask, but I’m telling you anyway. Snails are one of my favorite creatures and for a long time I couldn’t pinpoint why. Then I realized it’s because I value their slowness, their intentionality, their extremely chill vibes. I always felt like I was ‘behind’ in some way, and I’m learning to reframe slowness as a beautiful thing. Thanks for all you do- excited to read more! X

Hello! I'm Gabriel Matesanz. I'm an illustrator who used to live with his mother just south of Portland, now in NYC.

Personally, I would love to see more of the kinds of work that inspire you like what you've shared above. I once heard a statistic that people spend an average of 4-5 seconds in front of paintings at museums (if they stop), so I'm trying to practice staring at images for longer.

That's an excellent goal. I'm really out of the habit of spending a long time with art. All the IG scrolling has probably rearranged my brain a little. But that's good feedback. I'll be posting a lot about stuff that inspires me. :)

Hi Carson, I'm a high school librarian and an artist. I would really like to write and illustrate children's books, a goal I am finally (yet slowly) working towards. I am definitely a slowpoke and a perfectionist and I would love to hear more about how you manage that in your career.

100% with you on the slowpoke/perfectionist and how to manage that. And yay working on writing children's books!

I will totally get into that on Slowpoke. The short answer is that I take on a less work than other illustrators I know and make less money but feel less crazy. I'm also always behind schedule on the things I do take on. But I'll get into this in more detail here eventually.

Hi, I'm Abby, a graphic designer and mom from San Diego, CA (more specifically a small coastal town called Encinitas). I love the name Slowpoke and the step away from social media (even the once-beloved Instagram, which felt more intimate back in the day). As easy and accessible as digital access is, I do love the idea of a physical paper, and I'd totally pay for hand-stamped newsletter, just to get something beautiful and sunny in the mail. I was a stamp collector as a kid, and I still get giddy when the post office releases gorgeous stamps (Like Elise Gravel's message monsters—have you seen them? They're delightful and come with extra stickers you can use to decorate the monsters!) I'm currently contemplating starting a small and free community magazine for kids called Oh, goodie! My logical brain says there's a reason free community kids mags aren't really a thing but my gut says, what's the harm in just putting it out there? Plus, extra bonus if I can get kids writing letters and postcards—how cool would it be to write them back and use those awesome Message Monsters stamps?

As a general fan and casual collector of monsters, I thank you for sharing that Message Monsters exist.

They also come with silly hats—just thought you should know. I believe all stamps should come with adorable characters and a wardrobe.

I don't collect stamps but I do like buying special ones to match whatever cards or mail I send out. Speaking of beautiful stamps, I just bought some "mountain flora" stamps designed by Lili Arnold, they are wonderful!

Oh, thank you for sharing! Those are quite lovely. I don't collect stamps anymore but still buy them for the same purpose as you. It's so fun to get mail with a pretty stamp—tiny little morsels of joy.

Keeley, I got those mountain flora stamps. I guess I am still a stamp collector :)

I think Oh, goodie! sounds great. My friend Chris Colin published a free online newspaper for and by kids during the pandemic that I thought was pretty great. I don't know if it has any relationship to your idea but it was pretty amazing to watch kid artists and journalists process lockdown: https://sixfeetofnews.wordpress.com

Wow, thank you so much for sharing this with me, Carson. In some ways it's similar, and so much more, in other ways. My thought was to keep it in the elementary school age range, but what Six Feet did was seamlessly blend together and give equal space and importance to the impressive work of kids of all ages. I love it.

Hi Everyone! I'm Kristin from Madison, WI. My interest in drawing cartoons/appreciation for Carson's style brings me here. I draw them for fun, as gifts, and sometimes as part of my job as an educator. I am also a card-carrying member of the crooked nose club. My current weird project is watching every Nicolas Cage movie ever made and it's going well - over 30 in! I live in a tiny house with my husband who is a giant who owns a board game store and also a dog who is a giant. Speaking of giants, I drew the D&D party Colin was in for the twitch stream and he used my goofy cartoon as his avatar and it made everybody laugh (and that's why I like to draw)!

I'm super excited to see what comes up here. I miss the days of Livejournal vs. Facebook/Instagram. Scrolling both makes me sad/distracted more than happy these days.

Oh my gosh yes - so much love for Mandy. I saw the poster a couple of years ago and went.. this looks AWESOME and it was for so many reasons. Color Out of Space is also fun to watch if you liked Mandy...but beware - it's a Lovecraftian movie about a family in a farmhouse!
