From the Editor
Hi. I’m Carson and this is Slowpoke. I thought about calling it Slowpoke Illustrated because I wanted it to have a name that made it sound like a newspaper. I thought: I’ll design an old-fashioned newspaper masthead. I’ll call myself the editor-in-chief. Each newsletter will have a few different segments with titles that sound like newspaper sections, and each installment will begin with From the Editor.
But everyone I asked said that just Slowpoke is better than Slowpoke Illustrated. And it occurs to me that maybe I don’t want this to be a place with rules and parameters and a conceptual vision. Maybe I should just let it evolve.
That said, I do still want to call myself the editor-in-chief. Also, if you’re interested in a beautiful newsletter that quietly nods to local newspaper journalism, may I recommend The Quill Scene by Nikki McClure?
Home & Garden
I live on a small historic farmstead south of Portland, Oregon. I’m not a farmer. I’m not even an aspiring farmer. I’m a gardener, the keeper of a few farm animals, and, along with my family, the caretaker of this old property, established by a country doctor from Indiana who came over on the Oregon Trail.
This is my big gambrel-roofed barn:
And this is my household:
That’s us.
Who are you? Feel free to say hi and introduce yourself in the comments. Tell us where you’re from and what you’re into.
Hi! I'm Sam from Nyack, NY. I'm into music, illustration, gardening, making things, and vintage shopping.
Excited to follow along on a non-instagram platform, where there's a bit more space to expand ideas (or not!) and it doesn't have that drugified-scrolling energy. Huzzah!
Hello! I'm Gabriel Matesanz. I'm an illustrator who used to live with his mother just south of Portland, now in NYC.
Personally, I would love to see more of the kinds of work that inspire you like what you've shared above. I once heard a statistic that people spend an average of 4-5 seconds in front of paintings at museums (if they stop), so I'm trying to practice staring at images for longer.
