I didn’t used to be able to make time for it on family trips but it’s just the two of us and we are doing our own things a lot on this trip, which is cool. Ten seems to be the golden age for this kind of travel.
I'm enjoying following along. My family, including my 4-year old son, are about to do our first trip to Japan in early May. It's great getting this little preview through your own trip. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this. This was beautifully told, and somehow restorative to read. I studied Chinese calligraphy in school and do a fair bit of abstract Fraktur calligraphy when I can. It'd be a delight to see more abstract calligraphy of yours if you enjoy it! Safe travels.
Thank you so much for this post! I am going to Japan next week with my high school students. I'm the art teacher and I will try to bring a few of them to this amazing place!!!
You should! I went back the next day with Milo, who is also an artist. I forgot to get white pigment and I wanted him to have this profound art supply experience too. 🙂 Just know that there is only room for a couple of customers in this place at a time. When Milo and I went there was one other woman in the shop and it was crowded.
i have a ten year old too and the part where you thought milo might die during the silent flower arranging really made me laugh 😂 the scene played out in my head so perfectly, it was like i was there! thank you for taking us along with you two!
Burst into tears! She touched your heart and spoke to your soul. Thank you for sharing your beautiful very moving story. Milo! Little boys are the best.

I'd have cried after the beautiful art supply store experience too. T__T So awesome, loved reading this one!
Magnificent pigments, art store, and painting!
I cry every time I arrive in Japan and sit on a train, because somehow, it all just feels so beautiful to my senses ;-)
I loved reading this. Thank you.
So lovely to read this in a brief moment of quiet during a very hectic day, thank you for sharing!
Omg the art supply store. When I read that you burst into tears I burst into tears. So beautiful - gorgeous photos and writing.
Wow, I’m so happy for you two having such a great time! Love your writing :)

I’ve never been to Japan and would love to go someday. It’s been lovely seeing it through your eyes.
