Great journal entries! We made an almost identical pilgrimage in ‘06 with our 12 yr old and also didnt spend enough time in Nara. Next time in Kyoto, see the mind-blowingly beautiful Kawai Kanjiro house and museum; he made everything in it! 🙏🏽

I’ve loved reading your Japan adventures! I went back in 2007 and this has made me want to go back. ( and your illustrations are beautiful)

Thank you for the comment about 10 year olds and travel. My sister just turned 10, and I am part of her village of adults helping to raise her. I'll have to think on what sort of trips she might enjoy.

Loved reading these journal entries. We lived in Japan for two years a while ago and can't wait to take our son (now 6) there when he's a couple of years older. We have a book from Japan with that exact same ghost on it called, The Ghost's Tempura - even though we can read Japanese we have no idea what's going on in it. Thanks for sharing.

Arigatogozaimasu, Carson. Happy Birthday to Milo! Japan has been on our list for ages, and we can't wait to go some day. I've really enjoyed the glimpses into your favorite moments and reading your thoughts about the experience. Love your drawings, of course, the line and how you capture texture and detail. The ghost and frog books immediately make me want to open them and see what treasure awaits inside! That book shop must have been incredible.

Thank you for these posts. I lived in Japan (on an Air Force Base near Tokyo) with my family from age 9-12 and I still think about it all the time. I saved so many of the small precious things I bought while I was there. It's a magical place. 🌸

i think those must be the best souvenirs possible. i feel inspired to select only the best trinkets and items the next time i travel...these each seem to have a specific purpose or meaning - or they're just silly, and that's special, too.
