Plants and Animals

to soothe unquiet hearts
24

It’s been a very sad week in America. I can’t offer any wisdom but I do find some solace in the plants and animals around me, going about their business in spite of it all. Here are a few things that made me happy recently.

Rosy light on this oak tree, centuries old.

Errant peppermint, cramming its way through a wattle fence in the shadow of a sage plant.

Angel Wings (all the grey hens are named Angel Wings because I can’t tell them apart) in a perennial bed about to go off.

My feet disappearing into my lawn, which is actually my clover bed, I guess.

Milo’s flower garden. We planted it last summer and forgot about it but it came back anyway.

Dolly, an ancient llama in my care, saw the vet and got a clean bill of health.

Chives, oregano, and thyme at their loveliest.

Milo, age 9, climbed the magnolia tree to pick one of the last remaining flowers. He presented it to me in the kitchen, along with a petal that fell off in transit. It’s making me cry to think about it. I can’t wrap my head around how quickly my kids are growing up, let alone the prospect of losing them in a senseless tragedy. But it’s okay to cry, you guys. It’s okay.

And I won’t leave you with that. I’ll leave you with Becky and Penny knee high in a pasture of grass at its sweetest.

Love,
Carson
