This is lovely. I relate to: 48, whitening/ greying hair (which for me feels powerful and wise at times, then tiring and fragile at others) the sun coming out and not wanting to miss it… LOVE your paintings today and also loved last year’s drawings too (which I’ve been returning to peep at all year and thinking about Rusty Nib no4.)
‘Soon Child ‘ is pretty great too on the Russel Hoban front…
I loved seeing and hearing about your day! Once I started going gray, I colored my hair for years. But once I stopped coloring it, I have really loved my gray! Now I add a few wispy streaks of purple, which has been lots of fun! It has been a great conversation piece, amazing how many people stop me to talk about it!!
I really enjoyed your post, Carson! It was nice to see your paintings and follow along with your day. Lately, I've been enjoying more visual content on this platform. I'm also an artist, and I'm trying to incorporate more of my art into my writing here.
Congrats for another hourly comic day in the books! And thanks for posting to IG stories the day before with a heads up. I tried it too! I tried the nearly impossible breakneck speed and at one point slowed down and made one comic over a few hours, because as WendyMac would say, no rules in art! Again, congrats! I enjoy following your comic adventures every year!
Just want to say I thought the portrait (with glasses) was the best art in the article. The hair is nice and wavy, and I liked how you did the shadows under the glasses lenses.
Now I feel strongly that there needs to be an illustrated edition of Riddley Walker. There are few books I've read that both A) inspired such strong images in my imagination, and B) left me so often wondering how to imagine a scene I didn't entirely understand.
Even better if all the characters are depicted as anthropomorphic badgers. The book never says they’re not.
I LOVED all of those weird Russell Hoban novels - Amaryllis Night and Day was my first and and probably still my favourite. Your illustrations + Riddley Walker = stuff dreams are made it!
This is great, happy to discover your newsletter via Katherine May’s recommendation in her newsletter the clearing. I missed Feb 1 but will try this weekend😊

Thanks for the great posts!
Gorgeous paintings, and I enjoyed your storytelling along the way. 😌
Love these paintings and your narrative too ♥️ I hope the crostini was delicious :-) How many cats do you have?
It felt good reading and seeing this. We also have a cat named Mish.

I enjoyed this years edition! I admire you going with what you felt (painting) rather than ‘gotta stick to the comic format! Thank you
