thank you Carson. It is great to get paid for doing your art, but sometimes that becomes a burden as well. I have seen some amazing cloth art from Africa (Ethiopia I think), which would fit the image of a quilt, though it isn't exactly that. Huge amount of time put into them, what they get paid for each one you can't really turn into a, 'what is this per hour?' because it just makes you cry.
I think independent wealth is what you should strive toward as then you can do whatever you want with your time. But needing to pay the bills and actually have to work to do that is like everyone I know. Read what Adrian Piper said about artists who support themselves off of their art. What you make is so wonderful that people should be throwing money at you to keep making it.
Right now I'm listening to A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel. It's about the French Revolution and if my mind wanders for one second I completely lose track of what's going on. It would be a better one to read than to listen to, but it's still great. Before that I listened to Morality Play by Barry Unsworth. That was a good one and fit the medieval vibe of the quilt.
I have no good answers to the making-money-through-textiles, but it's up there on my list of dream jobs, too. Have you seen Gareth Brookes' graphic novel about a 1518 community that is overtaken with dancing that he illustrated using "pyrography and embroidery"? Seems up your alley! https://www.gbrookes.com/shop/the-dancing-plague
The more laborious and incredible hand-stitched things in the world, the better!
P.S. My all time fave pet name is Grendel, after Beowulf's monster
The quilt you are working on is lovely, a little haunting and beautiful. I too have been wondering if I could make a living from embroidery instead of children's books - I found the same answer - Nope:)
The cat is clearly Asterix. Thanks for the Jean Ritchie song. Love how she’s singing about courting a woman. There’s a market for everything you just need to find your quilt tribe.
That cat's name is obviously Merlin, the song touching, the quilt amazing, calendula beautiful (makes me miss warmth)....but that wallpaper! Swoon! Where didn't you get it? How old is it? Peel n' stick or glue application? I'm in love.
Thank you for the picture of the flowers, I put them in my sketchbook called ‘greenhouse’.

Hope you get there.
Top 3 audiobooks for recent quilting escapades? Best of luck!

enzo! it means "home ruler" which, well, he obvs is
This was my thought as well!
Very looking forward to that book!

Alas! But there are worse jobs than ours, I guess.
Agreed absolutely!!! I love my job and feel super lucky - but I also love embroidery.
Reallllly burying the llama lede there…
Ha ha. I know.

I like the back side of the quilt is like the doppelgänger of the front. So similar, but something is amiss.
I think he looks like a Lazlo.
OMG! That's light years past anything 'Martha Stewart', you're a rock star! Well, it's amazing and I'm impressed.
I see you have Bear and a few non-English names on your lists, so how about Mishka? It means ‘little bear’ in Russian.
We’ve decided on Misha, which is very close! And maybe he’ll be Mishka sometimes too.
Yay, nice choice! 🐈⬛
I like that.

I made it! I designed it myself and it was screenprinted by Thatcher (formerly Juju Papers) in Portland. There is a version for sale to the public too - available in other color ways and without my family’s initials in it: https://thatcherstudio.com/search?type=product&options%5Bprefix%5D=last&q=Carson+ellis
So very excited for this new book! I'm also tempted to try quilting, though it seems like something you'd need a lot of space for
Not a ton of space. You could do it on your kitchen table. You need room for a sewing machine and enough space to cut fabric on.
