Atmospheric River
Start Your Car, It's Everywhere
Hello from the gloomy depths of a Pacific Northwest atmospheric river. It’s so wet here, and so dark. Man, I’m grateful for my warm house. I hope everyone in my city somehow manages to find shelter that isn’t a tent on a flooded sidewalk.
Workshop FAQ
Friends, these workshops filled up so fast. I’m surprised and delighted. A lot of people reached out with questions. Here are some answers.
Will there be more workshops?
Yes! Of course. As long as there is interest, I’ll keep teaching these two classes: the All-Level Workshop and the Gouache Intensive. I aim to offer one or the other every month. I’ll be announcing another All-Level Workshop next week.
Is there a waitlist?
I’m keeping a waitlist for the current workshops in the event of cancellations. If you emailed inquiring about this, you’re on that list and should have gotten a response saying so. If you’d like to be on the waitlist, send an email to Slowpoke Studio.
How can I get a heads up?
The waitlist only applies to current workshops that have booked up and doesn’t carry over to future workshops. It occurred to me too late that early access to workshops should be a perk of paid subscriptions. So for now I’m going to open up registration to paid subscribers 24 hours before the public announcement. The best way to get a heads up on workshop enrollment is to become a paid subscriber.
Can I buy a recording of a workshop?
That’s not something I’m offering right now. Eventually I might. I’ll keep you posted.
How many spots are there in the Gouache Intensive?
This is a very small class. The current workshop has 12 students in it. The All-Level Workshop is a lot bigger.
If you have more questions, I’m happy to answer them in the comments.
If you’re signed up for the workshop on Saturday, awesome! I will see you there. You should have gotten an email yesterday with all the pertinent info. If not, check your junk folder.
She May Turn Around and See a Clearer Day
I made these paintings a few years ago during another rainy spell and called them “Start Your Car, It’s Everywhere” after a lyric in a song called She May Turn Around by the Innocence Mission.
And she may turn around
And see a clearer day
And see a clearer light
You won’t, you will not give in to despair
(You start your car), it’s everywhere
But in your heart.
It’s a very atmospheric river song.
Here’s a picture of a kid I saw waiting for the bus in front of a high school yesterday.
And here’s another beautiful Innocence Mission song to cry to.
Stay dry, folks. Don’t give in to despair. Start your car, it’s everywhere, but in your heart.

Your posts are like sunlight filtered through spent rainclouds—thank you for the thoughtful, inspiring words reveling in the present elements.
I was wondering if you might post a supplies list for the two workshops as we wait to register for the next iteration—especially the gouache intensive. I’m particularly thinking if you have particular brands you like or a “starter palette” with any convenience colors you’d recommend? I have a random assortment of colors and brands but I’m very curious as to what you might recommend. Also I don’t want to show up to the class without a color I really need. Lol.
Thought this might be useful prep we could do. Just a thought.
Thank you so much for offering these workshops!
Ah dang, thanks for this song. I needed this today. She even mentions the lakes of Canada. Good for homesickness x
