Remember Houseguest? The podcast where Colin and I interview people who sleep over? Our first guest was Jon Klassen. That was back in April and I guess we don’t actually have a lot of houseguests because many months went by and nobody came to stay and finally the substack people were like, Hey are you still doing that podcast or what?
Yes, we are! Reintroducing Houseguest, the podcast where ideally our guests sleep over but sometimes they don’t and we interview them over zoom, as we did this month with our friend, the brilliant Nova Scotian cartoonist, Katie Beaton. You can listen to Episode 2 over at Colin Meloy’s Machine Shop. If you have never heard Katie Beaton of the Cape Breton Beatons sing in Scottish Gaelic, you are in for a very moving treat.
Kate Beaton is the New York Times bestselling cartoonist of Hark! A Vagrant and Step Aside Pops. She’s the winner of the Eisner, Ignatz, Harvey, and Doug Wright Awards. She’s also published the picture books King Baby and The Princess and the Pony. Her latest book, Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands, a graphic memoir, is a certified masterpiece. She hails from Cape Breton and lives with her family in her hometown of Mabou.
P.S. Here is a chaotic and star studded photo from the annual party mentioned in this podcast. We hosted it for almost ten years. It was called the Kids Book Kegger, or KBK.
Clockwise from lower left: Laura Park, Catia Chien, Vera Brosgol, Katie Beaton, Lisa Hanawalt, and Eleanor Davis. Geniuses, all.
OMG OMG OMG. Thank you.
I just finished Kate’s book and wow, it’s amazing. Thank you for this interview! Also I’m new to Writers House and the publishing industry in general this year and I’ve been wondering how to make friends (sometimes the online thing feels a bit distant); hearing about your past KBK events inspires me to find fun ways to connect 😊 Thanks for sharing!
